The Renaissance period was a time of great discovery and growth.
Not only in science and exploration but in the fine arts as well.
Four artists were more than just masters in the areas of
painting, sculpture and architecture.



 

Biographies
Born: April 15, 1452 - Died: May 2, 1519

Leonard the man - his machines: If you have a keen interest in machines this is an excellent site to visit. Loadstar's Lair provides an extensive look at Leonardo da Vinci. Along with his biography there is a listing of his works and those that came from his factory with very interesting details on each. You can even learn more about his other talents in writing and music as well as his famous mirror writing. A most excellent site!

Learning About Leonardo: Students from John F. Kennedy High School in the Bronx developed this site for Think Quest. It gives us a delightful look at Leonardo da Vinci and the mystery behind the Mona Lisa smile. They give us a sample of his music and links to other resources. Some pages are in frame format.

Leonardo da Vinci: The Artchive gives the story from "Sister Wendy's Story of Painting". Learn about his contribution to polymath, his other women with mysterious smiles and how he used depth. Links to more of his work and other reading material is provided.

Leonardo da Vinci: North Park University gives us a short biography on da Vinci with information and links to some of his paintings.
 

Lesson Plans

Art Master of the Week:  Leonardo da Vinci: Explore Art presents a lesson plan for connecting self portraits with printmaking. This lesson is designed primarily for younger students but could easily be adapted for higher classes. A brief biography is included with links to his work and other relevant sites.

Water Color Self Portraits: Dick Blick Art Materials gives an excellent lesson plan for creating self portraits in water color. Samples are included.

Oval Action Figures: Learn the basics of figure proportion and create oval action figures. Develop them further into figure drawings. This lesson plan comes from Sanford-Create Art.

The Restoration of the Last Supper: Guide Andrea Mulder-Slater gives us a history of the painting with several links to other discussions, views, theories and controversy behind this work of art. This site is presented by About.com.

Leonardo's Workshop: Sandford-the Write Site has an excellent game in which you go back in time to solve a mystery and learn more about the world of the Renaissance Masters.

Michelangelo Buonarroti: A very thorough offering of information from michelangelo.com. This site covers the early years, mid-life and final days of this great master. Links to resource material and other relevant sites are included. A word search game can also be found here.

Michelangelo: Mark Harden brings you information and images through the Artchives. A brief biography is present with an extensive detailing of many of his works.

 Michelangelo: North Park University brings us a short biography on Michelangelo with informational links to some of his works.
 

Lesson Plans

Artist of the Week: Michelangelo(1475 - 1564): Connie M. Powers gives a brief biography along with  links to his work and other relevant sites. Her lesson shows a technique for making a painting look old. the lesson is geared more for elementary students but could be adapted for higher classes.

Markers, Muscles, & Michelangelo: From Crayola.com comes a lesson plan to study and draw basic human anatomy, especially muscles and the human form. Adaptations for other subject areas are included.

About the Renaissance
