Elements of Design

These are the tools we use to create art.

Color is the reflection of White Light. From the spectrum of the Rainbow we developed the Color wheel and many techniques to use color.

Line is basically the path of a moving point. But there are many ways we use lines to create art. To express contour, mood, direction, detail, movement, and patterns.

 

Shape is the outline of an object or an area. Some shapes are very real and defined while others may just be implied.

Value is basically the change from light to dark. A value scale shows us the gradual changes and we can use many techniques to shade.

Texture is the "feel" of a surface. Texture can actually be seen and felt in 3D art. In 2D works, it is the illusion of having texture.

Form is also known as mass. This means having solidity or the illusion of being solid. This helps make objects in paintings seem more real.

Space is using perspective to show distance in a painting. It can also refer to the positive and negetive areas in a work of art.
