There are two basic factions of space. One is used to show distance and the other to identify area.
The rules of perspective are used to show distance. Artists use these rules to create a three dimensional appearance on a two dimensional service. These rules are: size, placement, overlapping, linear, detail, and atmospheric.
Spacial areas are referred to as positive and negative space. A statue takes up positive space while the air about it is considered negative space. In two dimentional work the The main subject within the piece is positive while the lesser background is negative.
